What role did the Chinese community play in Malaya’s independence? In July 2024, a team of researchers led by INSAP, accompanied by scholars from TARUMT and UTAR, went to retrieve historical documents relating to Malaysia’s independence, including recently declassified records from the UK National Archives. These discoveries, combined with the insights from the experts, may renew our conventional understanding of the Chinese community’s historical position and provide a fresh perspective on how they influenced and shaped Malaysia’s journey to independence.

Session 2 – Reflections and Horizons: The Political Future of the ChineseCommunity in Malaysia

The Chinese Malaysian community has always pin their hopes on protection of the constitutional rights in this country and rallied behind political entities to safeguard the interests of the community. However, things may not necessary be an easy journey. In view of the continued uncertainties and challenges, the panelists in this session explore the Chinese community aspirations and how we should reposition ourselves within the complex and shifting political landscape to ensure that our rights and status are protected, improved, and elevated.
